Nintendo of America has announced that the new Nintenod DSi will launch in the US on April 5th, it will retail for $170. The European release date for the Nintendo DSi hasn’t been announced yet, here’s a couple of interesting quotes from Nintendo employees:
“Ever since the arrival of the first Game Boy, consumers worldwide have turned to Nintendo for their portable gaming,” said NoA sales boss Cammie Dunaway.
“Nintendo DSi builds on Nintendo’s commitment to bringing fun and creative entertainment to everyone, and will allow consumers to personalize and share their very own experiences.”
Here’s the official Nintendo DSi announcement press release:
REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 18, 2009 – Nintendo pioneered hand-held entertainment in the ’80s and made it fully mobile with the Game Boy™ video game system. Now, Nintendo is transforming the way people access, experience, create and share content with the new Nintendo DSi™ system, the third iteration of the world’s best-selling portable video game system. Nintendo DSi launches in the United States on April 5, 2009, at an MSRP of $169.99. The colors available at launch will be Blue and Black.
“Ever since the arrival of the first Game Boy, consumers worldwide have turned to Nintendo for their portable gaming,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Nintendo DSi builds on Nintendo’s commitment to bringing fun and creative entertainment to everyone, and will allow consumers to personalize and share their very own experiences.”
Some features that will be built into the system and ready to enjoy upon purchase include the Nintendo DSi Camera, Nintendo DSi Sound and Nintendo DSi Shop. The most noticeable feature of the slim Nintendo DSi system is its two cameras – one camera is on the external body, and the second one points at the user when the device is flipped open. As the first truly interactive digital camera in a video game system with 10 different interactive “lenses” that can manipulate your photos, the Nintendo DSi Camera offers an easy way to take and share your photos with family and friends. The cameras also present people with unprecedented ways to interact with their games while giving developers a new tool to devise creative games and experiences. If the touch screen gave Nintendo DS a sense of feel and the microphone allowed it to hear, the two cameras give Nintendo DSi the sense of sight.
Another enhanced feature is the Nintendo DSi Sound application, which serves as both an interactive voice recorder and music player that allows users to play with their music while they listen to it. Users can access different audio filters or control the pitch and speed of recorded voice or music files to alter voices or change the tempo of a song. The mic is located between the two screens when the device is flipped open, and there is also a stereo headphone output that lets users listen to music saved on an SD card, even with the screen shut.
In the world of software, Nintendo DSi will be the platform for the most relevant and fun on-the-go games and applications. The Nintendo DSiWare™ application will populate Nintendo DSi with software that can be downloaded using Nintendo DSi Points directly to the portable system, just as WiiWare™ has with Nintendo’s Wii™ console. Developers big and small are invited to create software that makes use of the properties and functions of the hardware. Nintendo DSiWare games and applications will be available at a range of values, starting at 200 points.
In addition to downloadable games, Nintendo DSi is able to play games made specifically for the system and sold at retail. The system can also play most Nintendo DS™ games, and will have access to a library of more than 850 titles originally made for that system.
Also on April 5, a new Nintendo DS game, Rhythm Heaven™, will join this roster of games available for both Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DS owners in the United States. Having sold more than 1.6 million copies since its July 2008 launch in Japan and still increasing sales today, this infectious game challenges players to tap and slide the stylus on the touch screen in time to original music created by legendary Japanese pop-star producer TSUNKU♂. Simple gestures with the stylus combined with fun music and quirky visuals make Rhythm Heaven a completely unique musical experience for players of all ages.

Well it has all of the features of the DS Lite (except for the GBA slot) and they’re enhanced, too. Like before, the microphone was pretty bad and your extent of using it was mostly blowing into it and snapping your fingers or something. And it has two cameras, which is awesome (although they are really low quality). It’s basically like a really small laptop for 170 bucks! I think that it’s totally worth buying.

Hopefully the upgrade program won’t cost very much. I could care less about the picture, and music — I just want a game console! What the hell would I be taking pictures for? These features would be very inconvenient to use, also — I mean you’d have to turn your DS on, then flip it open and have to lug it around.
The only reason I would get this is if I could load roms on the SD card and play from there. This way I wouldn’t have to buy an Acekard or R4 unit.

I agree with gamehead and Andrea. It will be worth every cent. If you ask me though, nintendo is crazy for making so cheap! I would pay $200.00 and I’m no rich man! I am going to buy screen protectors when I buy my mattel blue DSi. It seems like the government sent some kind of secret signal to every clock in America saying, “GO SLOWER! THEY WANT THE DSI!”

We got ours at midnight in San Antonio, TX at the Game Stop!!! We traded our DS Lite in. It ROCKS!!! The touch screen is a lot like my iPhone! So cool!!!! My kids are on cloud 9! LOL!!! ;D

Dude i cant wait for the DSI. When i heard that they were coming out with a new one i peed my pants…i have got to say that i own a ds and a psp and an ipod touch, and my to favorites were the ds and the ipod. When i learned that you can buy games and apps and that it can hold music i knew it would rival the ipod touch, then i learned that the dsi has built in cameras and i knew that the dsi would rock. some critics say that dsi would not improve from the lite as much as the lite improved from original ds but thats a load of crap-look at all the new functions theyve added…nintendo is amazing

yaaa yaaa lets get back on topic…ok..we had a fire drill during band class and one person had a DSi so he got it out…. IT WAS AWSOME. he was taking pictures, recording sounds…then… the teacher came.(scary music lol) she said that he can have it out as long as he takes a pic of her…after he did, he put a mushdash on her, and a bunch of other funny things… best band class EVER! lol

@IAMGOD: I dont think movies will run on the DSi over the internet (no flash)… butt,(note how i spelled that lol) i hope nintendo wil make movie game cards(like PSP but on PSP it has UMB’s) or maybe we might be able to “rent” movies on the shop..like 200pts. to “rent” a movie for a couple of days… that would be an awsome addition to the alredy great DSi.

I got the DSi on April 5th and I will never regret it. Its the best thing ever!!! I had waited 9 months for it and I love it!!! I almost got it imported from Japan for $400 but…then I decided to wait.
And I think that they will eventualy either have a flash player, or a special youtube for the DSi.
Does anyone know when they will come out with a Firmware update for the DSi??? That will probably have flash player, and an even more efficient way to store things on the system memory.

i won my dsi off the net. i got it on april 1. they already have a flash card that aloud you to watch movie, play games on the web, also alouds you to dowload game off the net. its called AK2i, there R4i card that will do the same thing you can buy these cards on the net for $17 or $19. nintendo is coming out with alot of new applications for DSi, it will be just like the psp when its finished.

I bought a nintendo dsi and it costs 170 bucks. This game is awesome and has hi-tech gadgets like the wii. I am hoping for the ols school games to come in the dsi shop channel, such as gb, gba, game gear, and neo geo pocket.

OMG iluv the DSi i have the matte blue and it works verywell allthouh i cant get my music files to a type of file thats compatible to theaac files i have one the song is Harder o breathe by maroon5 and i haveotential break up song by alyand aj bt it wont play i thik the files have to be specifically aac fles cause pbs s an mp4 file that dostplay idk why ut anyway i hope they come out with like a pokemon ranch app forthe dsi ware bt where do u get the cards f flash player ddc cause that would be really nice but anyways ta would be so col if u could do that like what someone said earlier on like renting vids for acouple of days that sweeness imagination ive been threatned to be grounded from my ds a couple of times lol but ididnt (THANK GOD) its like an addiction i ant live witout it where ever i go although im a gamer i still playaround with my dads ipod touch

well i had a look at the pictures, and compared to the ds lite i reckon that any colours beside white and black would look really dumb….but thats my opinion. im getting a white one then getting a purple metal case!!! oh they also dont mention that the dsi when in talking mode the text comes out in a ranbow of colours!!!!!

I have had My Nintendo Dsi Since Apr. 5. i did a dsi update to version 1.4 and guess what!!!
You can now upload Pictures Directly from your nintendo dsi to your facebook account via wifi connection. all you have to do once you do an update, Take a picture, go to either album(system memory or sd card slot) and by the picture you took it will explain that you can do that. once you connect to the internet all you have to do is sign in and it will upload it for a minute or two and next time you go on facebook you will see it!!! Ive done that once already and it actually works!!! !_!
